As my final instalment to my showcase month of old DJ mixes, I return to House music, but this time with a little twist.

In May 2005, pioneering DJ Sasha made music history by being the first ever DJ to play a live set on a purely digital medium. Recorded at the BBC’s Maida Vale studios with no turntables, not even any CDs, Sasha recorded his essential mix using a laptop, Ableton Live, and some MP3s.

At the time I was quite excited by these advancements in technology, so not to be outdone by Sasha I got hold of a copy of Ableton and started doing my own digital mixes.

The following quick mix presents a blend of House music and takes you on a journey from a funky groove to a more tougher sound in just about 30 minutes. Enjoy!

This is the third instalment of a retired DJ’s month of music. Apologies for not getting this published on Friday but that pesky real world grabbed hold of me and forced me to spend a few days away from home and the blogosphere.

I mentioned before that my tastes in music can be quite eclectic, and here’s the proof. Think of funk and jazz, add in a dose of Austin Powers’ mojo, mix it with a splash of elevator music and, dare I say it, porno music, and the result is… erm… Skeewiff weirdness.

This mix was recorded at the beginning of 2003 and is just under 70 minutes long. If you can get past track two you’re doing well!

Following from last weeks well-received House music mix, recorded by yours truly back when I used to be a DJ, my month of music continues with a fine mix of funk, groove and disco.

The 70s occupies a special place in my heart: firstly it’s the decade in which I was born (by two weeks), but also the standard of music that came out of the 70s is the greatest mankind has ever known. Technically and artistically, the 70s was a bloody brilliant decade for music, across all genres.

I recorded this mix sometime in 2003 when I was going through a phase of hunting down and buying old and rare vinyl. You will hear acts like the Fatback Band, War, and Funkadelic. In fact this mix actually contains two of my all-time favourite tunes.

The mix is just over 70 minutes long. Feet don’t fail me now!

Friday is here and the weekend has landed… so why not listen to some House music?

I’ve revealed here before that I’m a retired DJ. I hung up my headphones in the professional sense just over two years ago, and since moving house early last year I have not even touched the wheels of steel for fun.

Paul Enderson recently asked to hear some of my old mixes so I spent a few hours this week just listening to some of my old music and it has really got me in the mood. I’ve decided to make a mini-series of this and post a different mix every Friday throughout July.

My tastes in music are quite diverse and eclectic, but what I loved playing out more than anything else is House music. House music really is a DJ’s music.

This first mix is a CD I recorded back in December 2004 for a Worldwide DJ competition (by worldwide, they meant Swindon, Bristol and the South West). The mix got me into the final of the competition, but alas I didn’t win it.

I would describe this mix as deep’n'jazzy, sexy’n'funky, ass-jackin’ House! Which is a genre of music I invented . If you think you don’t like House, please listen to this mix because I defy you not to be wiggling your ass around in your chair after five minutes.

The mix is about 60 minutes long. Enjoy!

Download the MP3 of this mix.

Lookout next week for something completely different.

Many thanks for the previous posts’ comments: Paul, Tara and David.

Well, fear not my friend. Sit back, click play, and let off some steam.

(Credit to Sera for finding this one. And thanks, Sera, for giving me an excuse to put audio on my blog – I’ve been wanting to do it for months!)
