How beautiful is a street-name sign?

I know what you’re thinking. They’re not beautiful - they’re dull. Could there even be a topic less remarkable and more dreary than that of street-name sign design?

Well, if you’re thinking such, then you haven’t been to Madrid!

Calle Del Leon

Calle De Arrieta and Calle De San Quintin

Calle De Santa Maria

Every street-name sign in the centre of Madrid has a tiled sign like this, each with a unique illustration. Little touches like this add a lot of character to an urban space.

My girlfriend was clearly quite taken by these signs - her photo album has more pictures of street signs than of me! :(

It’s a nice touch indeed. It’d be great to see some more photos. They’re making me want to go back.

Roll on Liverpool vs Milan in Athens!

Have a peek at my Picasa album:

I had a quick look, thanks.

That lake you went rowing on looks so beautiful. I never saw that area. Some other great shots of monuments in there.

I’m rushing out to play poker with some friends. Have a great weekend, Aaron.

The rowing was at Parque del Retiro just to the east of the old city. Madrid does have some fantastic green spaces and this park was the pick of the bunch. A beautiful place.

Although I did pick up a bit of sunburn whilst having my good lady row me around.

Have your say
