Conceptual iPod with roll-out screen

I’ve just installed the very impressive FLV Embed plugin, for embedding, you guessed it, FLV movies. Which are Flash movies, in case you were wondering. To show off the plugin I am posting a video of a conceptual iPod I designed using Autodesk 3ds Max.

The brief simply tasked me with designing a new range of iPod. I decided to go down the flexible roll-up screen route, as pioneered with the Philips Readius prototype. This allows for a large screen size in a pocket-sized device – the holy grail for mobile devices.

In time I will post a full presentation for this project, once I get the portfolio section of the site up and running. In the meantime, enjoy the movie (with sound).

EDIT: An advert for this conceptual iPod can be seen here. (2 April 2007)

I want one :)
This is great work – love the choice of soundtrack too.
How many man hours?

Hi Johno, thanks for the comment.

It’s difficult to say how many hours, as I was learning 3DS Max at the time – it’s not an easy programme to learn so it took some weeks.

That said, now that I’ve got to grips with the programme, the basic shapes I’ve used are pretty simple and I could probably knock something like this together in one weekend. The most tricky part was annimating the hinges at the back of the screen.

what song is that?

Grabovech – It’s the Quantic Soul Orchestra – Feeling Good. A wicked tune.

Cool concept but looking at it I would have to say that it seems too fragile.

Diprosopus – Maybe you’re right – it’s certainly a concern. But things like this do exists – the Phillips Readius has a roll-out screen so the technology must be durable enough.

Could do with a screen on the front too maybe? Great idea though!
