WordPress + images = headache

Only a couple of days ago I was commenting on how amazing WordPress is (and it really is), but alas I have discovered a serious shortcoming in the way it handles images.

All WordPress users will be familiar with the clunky upload tool, which does exactly what it says on the tin - it uploads stuff. However, it offers absolutely no flexibility in how you file and organise your uploads, and no ways of manipulating the size of your images. It does automatically create a thumbnail for you, but unfortunately it’s a stupid poxy little thumbnail that’s no good for man nor beast. And you cant change the size.

Therefore I have spent over three hours this morning ploughing through the Internet in search of a suitable WordPress plugin to handle images better. I can tell you now there are millions of image-related plugins, and most of them don’t appear to do much really.

ImageManager 2.0I installed two or three plugins and subsequently uninstalled them, before settling on ImageManager 2.0 by a chap called Per Søind. ImageManager allows simple image manipulation (crop, resize, rotate) and offers a proper file management system. You can also add inline styles and assign class names to your images.

The only problem I have with the plugin is that you define the size of thumbnails in the options area of your WordPress control panel. Personally I would prefer the option to define thumbnail sizes individually as I upload each image.

However, nothing in life is perfect and ImageManager 2.0 certainly is the best image management plugin I have come across, and makes better what is in my opinion WordPress’ Achilles’ heel.

Save yourself the hours of searching, and trial and error, and download it now.
